Xian Destination Guide
It was long before the Open Door policy of 1980 that Xi'an opened its doors to the ancient world, the first Chinese city to do so. It was during the days of the Tang dynasty that Xi'an thrived as the first stop on the Silk Road. Eleven ruling dynasties, over a span of about 2000 years, used Xi'an as their capital city. Xi'an played a significant role in bringing the east and west closer during ancient times.
Like Constantinople and Rome, Xi'an was one of the world's leading trade and cultural centres. Xi'an has a population of six million and this historically rich city is today equally well known for its prosperity and modernity. It is an important manufacturing and industrial centre.
One of the most well known sites in Xian is the site of the Terracotta Warriors and Horses; they symbolically protect the mausoleum of Emperor Qin Shi Huang.
This Xian Destination Guide features some of the key things to see and do in Xian and surrounding districts, while our Xian Tours page offers up some great Xian tours and activities ideas. We have listed a number of major tourists attractions across China in our China Destination Guide.
